Deciphering Medical Bills

Two articles I read recently, that I find quite alarming and you should too. The first is an article that talks about medical bills and what a mystery they are.  The author talks a lot about how he cannot understand his medical bill because it is primarily test codes, scientific terms, CPT codes and ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. None of which he understood.

The author goes on to tell us that when he questioned the hospital or clinic about the bill he was told that they are too complicated for patients to understand but that the insurance company would understand. The article states, “According to one recent study, up to 90% of hospital bills contain errors”.  This is scary, and leads us right into the second article from the Huffington Post that tells us that in a study done by Harvard University, the #1 reason for bankruptcy in this country is medical bills, and furthermore, “72% of those who filed bankruptcy due to medical expenses has some type of medical insurance, thus debunking the myth that only the uninsured face financial catastrophes due to medical related expenses”.
