Deciphering Medical Bills

The first is an article that talks about medical bills and what a mystery they are.  The author talks a lot about how he cannot understand his medical bill because it is primarily test codes, scientific terms, CPT codes and ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. “Study Suggests Medical Errors Now Third Leading Cause of Death in the U.S.”

Johns Hopkins Medicine did this study, and was conducted over an 8-year period. The third leading cause of death equates to 250,000 deaths per year due to medical errors.

Terrible Care in an Emergency Room

I have a Medicaid client that has been going to the ER about once a week to get a paracentesis (fluid drained off the abdomen) due to Cirrhosis of the liver. He has been going to the ER because he was having a tough time finding a Primary Care Doctor who would take Medicaid. He usually gets 8 to 10 liters drained off each time he goes in for a procedure.

About 20% of Americans are Misdiagnosed Every Year

According to CBS News, 12 Million Americans misdiagnosed each year. (CBS News, April 17, 2014).

12 million misdiagnosed each year is a lot of people. It pretty much boils down to 1 out of every 20 Americans, and apparently half of those cases could end up in serious harm.
